Fee-only financial planning Sample practice

A plan for your family, and for the business you run

We help households decide how much to save, when they could retire and how to pay for college. For owners, we plan the business and the household together. You pay us a flat fee, agreed in writing before we start.

  • No commissions, and nothing to buy from us
  • Your accounts stay where they are, in your name
  • Meetings by video or at the office

What we plan with you

Most clients come to us with one question, usually about retirement or a child's college fund. The plan covers how that question touches the rest of your money.

  • Retirement planning

When you could stop working, what you can spend each year once you do, and which accounts to draw from first.

    • Retirement date and income
    • Social Security timing
    • Pension and rollover choices
  • College savings

How much to put aside for each child, which account to use, and how college fits next to your own retirement.

    • 529 plans and alternatives
    • Savings per child
    • Financial aid basics
  • Planning for business owners

Your household and your company side by side: what you pay yourself, a retirement plan for the business, and what happens when you step back.

    • Owner pay and cash reserves
    • Small-company retirement plans
    • Selling or handing on the business
  • Cash flow and taxes

Where the money goes each month, and the questions to bring to your accountant before the year ends.

    • Monthly budget and savings rate
    • Emergency fund
    • Year-end tax questions for your CPA

Who we work with

A good fit is easier to judge before the first call, so here it is in writing.

We're likely a good fit if

  • You're within 20 years of retiring and want to know what it would take
  • You have children and are weighing college savings against your own retirement
  • You own a business and the household and company money are hard to tell apart
  • You'd like to pay a fee you can see, for advice you can carry out yourself

We're probably not the right firm if

  • You want stock picks or calls on where the market is going
  • You're looking for someone to manage your investments day to day

If that's you, we'll tell you on the intro call and suggest what kind of adviser to look for.

How our fees work

One flat fee, set before we start and written into your agreement. We don't charge a percentage of your savings. Sample fees

Ongoing planning can be stopped with 30 days' notice. Fees on this concept site are samples; a working practice would publish its own.

From the first call to a written plan

Nothing is signed until step two, and the fee is agreed before then.

  1. A 20-minute intro call

You tell us what's on your mind. We explain how we'd help and quote the fee. It's free.

  2. You send your numbers

Once you've signed, you upload statements through a secure portal. Priya follows up on anything missing.

  3. We meet to build the plan

We go through the choices with you: savings rates, retirement dates, college accounts, the business.

  4. You get the written plan

A plan you can read in one sitting, with a one-page list of what to do and by when.

Useful to have for step two
  • Recent account statements
  • Last year's tax return
  • Pay stubs or business profit and loss
  • Insurance policies
  • Wills or trust documents, if you have them

Questions people ask before booking

What does fee-only mean?

Our only pay is the fee you agree with us. We don't earn commissions, and no one else pays us for recommending a product.

Do you manage our investments?

No. We tell you what we'd do with your accounts and why, and they stay where they are, in your name. If you later want someone to manage them, we'll go through what to ask.

What happens on the intro call?

Twenty minutes by phone or video. You tell us what's on your mind, and we explain how we'd help and what it would cost. If it isn't a fit, we'll say so.

We're 20 years from retiring. Is it too early?

No. With more years ahead you have more choices about how much to save and where, and college savings often matter more right now.

Can you look at our business and our household together?

Yes. That's most of what Marcus does: owner pay, the company's retirement plan and your family's plan get looked at in the same meeting.

Will you work with our accountant and attorney?

Yes, with your permission. We send them a short summary and our questions. They prepare your returns and legal documents; we don't.
