Outpatient physical therapy Sample practice
Physical therapy for pain, injuries and recovery after surgery
Cobbleway is a small outpatient clinic. Every visit is one to one with your physical therapist, and you leave each time with exercises to do at home.
- First visit about 60 minutes, with time for questions
- Insurance benefits checked before you come in
- Self-pay rates listed on this page
At the first visit we measure how far joints move and how strong the muscles around them are, so later visits have something to compare against.
What we treat
Muscle, joint and movement problems for adults and teenagers. Not sure we're the right place? Call and ask, and if we aren't, we'll suggest who to see.

Physical therapy isn't for emergenciesGo to an emergency room or call 911 for chest pain, sudden weakness or numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or a fall where you think something is broken.
What happens at your first visit
Most of the hour is talking and checking how you move. You won't be rushed onto equipment. Timings are samples.
About 60 minutes in all. Wear clothes you can move in. If your problem is in a knee or hip, shorts make the checks easier.
After you book
Before you arrive
We email your forms. Fill them in at home, or come 15 minutes early and do them at the front desk.
About 15 minutes
Talking it through
Your therapist asks how it started, what makes it better or worse, and what you want to get back to doing.
About 20 minutes
Movement and strength checks
We watch how you move, measure range and strength, and look at the joints around the sore area too. Say if anything hurts too much and we stop.
About 20 minutes
Your plan and first exercises
We explain what we found, suggest how often to come and for how long, and teach you two or three exercises to start at home.
How many visits will I need?
There isn't a set number. It depends on what's going on, how long it has been going on, and what you want to get back to doing. At the first visit we suggest a plan and when we'll review it.
- Plans usually start with one or two visits a week and space out as you do more on your own.
- We review progress at set points and change the plan, or end it, from there.
- If nothing is changing after a few visits, we'll say so and talk about other options, including going back to your doctor.
- You can stop at any time. Some insurance plans cap visits per year, and we tell you yours when we check your benefits.
Insurance or paying for yourself
You'll know what you're likely to pay before your first visit, either way.
Using insurance
Send us your insurance details when you book. We call your plan and tell you what you'll probably pay each visit: a copay, coinsurance, or the full visit cost until your deductible is met. Your plan has the final say on what it covers.
- Some plans need a referral or prescription first. We'll tell you if yours does.
- Some plans cap the number of visits each year or need approval before treatment.
- If you have out-of-network cover, we give you an itemised receipt to send your insurer.
Paying for yourself Sample rates
- First visitAssessment, plan and first exercises$14060 min
- Follow-up visitHands-on work, exercise and an updated home programme$9545 min
- Short follow-upCheck your exercises and move them on$7030 min
You pay at each visit. Your plan and its length are yours to decide; this is only a way to see the cost.
Your exercises between visits
Most of the work happens at home. You leave each visit with your exercises written down, with a drawing of each one, and we change them as you go.
- Usually two to four exercises at a time, ten to fifteen minutes a day
- A printed sheet, or the same sheet by email if you'd rather
- We check how you're doing them at the start of each visit
Bridge
2 sets of 10, once a day
Sit to stand
2 sets of 8, twice a day
Calf raise
3 sets of 12, once a day
Mild effort or ache is expected. Sharp pain, or pain that lasts into the next day, isn't: skip that exercise and tell us at your next visit.
What to bring to your first visit

Questions people ask before booking

Do I need a referral?
Often not. Some insurance plans only cover physical therapy with a referral or prescription from your doctor. We check this when we look up your benefits and tell you before your first visit.
Will it hurt?
Some tests and exercises can be uncomfortable, and you may feel sore the next day. Tell your therapist what you feel as you go. We change or stop anything that is too much.
How long is each visit?
The first visit takes about an hour. Follow-ups are 45 minutes, or 30 minutes for a short check on your exercises. These are sample timings.
Will I see the same therapist each time?
Yes, unless you ask to switch or your therapist is away. Your notes stay with the practice, so anyone covering can pick up where you left off.
What should I wear?
Something you can move in that lets us see the sore area: shorts for knees and hips, a loose T-shirt or vest top for shoulders and necks.
What if I need to cancel?
Give us 24 hours' notice and there's no charge. Reply to your reminder text or call the front desk. This is a sample policy.
Ask for a first appointment
Tell us a little about the problem and when you can come in. The front desk calls you back to pick a time and check your insurance. This is a demo form, so nothing is sent. Concept
