Tutoring centre, grades 3 to 12 Sample centre

Maths, reading, science and test prep, with the same tutor every week

Slatebrook is a small tutoring centre for school-age students. Every new student starts with a free first assessment, so sessions start at the level your child is working at.

  • One-to-one sessions, or small groups of up to four
  • A short written note to parents after every session
  • After school on weekdays and Saturday mornings

What we teach

Four subjects, taught by tutors who stick to them. Sessions follow your child's school curriculum and the plan from their first assessment.

  • Maths

    Grades 3 to 12

Times tables and fractions through algebra, geometry and calculus. We start from the topic your child is stuck on, which is often a year or two back.

  • Reading and writing

    Grades 3 to 12

Reading fluency and comprehension for younger students. Essay planning, paragraphing and editing their own drafts for older ones.

  • Science

    Grades 6 to 12

Middle-school science, then biology, chemistry and physics. Lab write-ups and the maths inside science questions get their own time.

  • Test prep

    Grades 8 to 12

High-school entrance tests, state tests and college entrance exams: a practice test first, then sessions on the question types that cost the most points.

One-to-one

60 minutes

  • One tutor, one student, the same time each week
  • Suits a student who is behind, ahead, or anxious about asking questions in a group
  • Available in any open slot, in person or by video

Small group

75 minutes, up to 4 students

  • Same grade band and subject, so the whole session is relevant
  • Suits steady practice and students who like working alongside others
  • Set days and times, listed in the schedule below

Free, 45 minutes

How the first assessment works

It isn't a test your child can fail. It shows us where to start, and it shows you how we work before you pay for anything.

  1. Book a time

Pick a 45-minute slot. Tell us the grade, the subject and what school has said so far.

  2. The assessment

Your child works through short, untimed tasks at and below their grade with a tutor, while you talk to our centre lead. Nobody gets a score or a grade.

  3. A written summary

Within three working days: what they can do comfortably, the gaps we noticed, and the format and number of sessions we'd suggest.

  4. Meet the tutor

If you go ahead, we match your child with one tutor and book a regular weekly time. You can change tutor at any point.

Bring if you have them

  • A recent school report
  • A marked test or two
  • This week's homework
  • Their calculator
  • Glasses, if they wear them

  • Priya Natarajan

  • Tom Gallagher

    Reading and writing

Grades 3 to 8, especially students who avoid reading aloud.

  • Adaeze Okafor

    Science and test prep

Biology and chemistry, plus the science sections of entrance tests.

  • Luis Ferreira

    Maths, grades 3 to 8

Fractions, ratios and word problems. Sessions in English or Spanish.

What parents hear from us

You shouldn't have to ask your child what happened in a session. These are sample policies.

  • A note after every sessionBy email the same evening: what was covered, how it went and any practice for the week.
  • A check-in every six weeksA 15-minute call or chat at pick-up with the tutor, looking back at the plan from the assessment.
  • One person to contactThe centre lead handles scheduling, billing and any worries, and replies by the next working day.
  • Open roomsSessions happen in study rooms with glass doors, and every tutor has had a background check.
Session noteSample note
Student
Grade 5, reading and writing, with Tom
What we did
Read a short chapter aloud together and talked about why the main character changed her mind.
How it went
Read the last page without stopping. Still unsure about the word "reluctant"; we'll come back to it.
For this week
Ten minutes of reading a night, any book. Write down one word to ask about.

Questions parents ask

Something else? Ask at the assessment, or ring (555) 018-4470.

Will tutoring raise my child's grades?

We can't promise that, and we don't. Grades depend on a lot that happens outside a session. What we do promise is the same tutor each week, a plan you've read, and a note after every session saying what was covered.

Do you help with homework?

Sometimes, when the homework is the topic they're stuck on. Most of a session follows the plan from the assessment, so it doesn't turn into a weekly homework rescue.

Can sessions be online?

Yes. One-to-one sessions can be in person or by video, with a shared whiteboard. Small groups meet at the centre.

What if we need to cancel?

Give us 24 hours' notice and we'll move the session or credit it. Later than that, the session is charged. These are sample terms.

Where do sessions happen?

In open study rooms with glass doors. Parents are welcome to wait in the front room.
