Interior design for the rooms you use every day
Sorrelgate is a small interior design studio. We plan the layout, choose the furniture, fabrics, lighting and paint, then order it all and set the room up. If you'd rather buy things yourself, we can send the plan by email instead.

- You approve every item and price before anything is ordered
- One designer from the first visit to install day

Sample projects
ConceptThese rooms were made up and drawn for this concept site to show how a project could go. They aren't real homes, clients or finished work.
-
A narrow living room with one window
- The brief
- Seat six for family evenings, keep the TV, and make the window end of the room worth sitting in.
- What changed
- Sofa moved to the long wall, a built-in bench under the window, two lamps in place of one ceiling light, and a wool rug that pulls the seating together.
-
A kitchen-diner for a family of five
- The brief
- A table that seats six on weekdays and eight at holidays, in a room that also has to hold homework and the dog bed.
- What changed
- An extending oak table, a cushioned bench along the wall, a low pendant over the table and wipe-clean performance fabrics on every seat.
-
A bedroom that doubles as a reading room
- The brief
- Darker for sleeping, brighter for reading, and space for a chair without crowding the bed.
- What changed
- Lined curtains on a ceiling track, a reading chair and lamp by the window, and wall lights each side of the bed in place of bedside lamps.
-
A spare room turned home office
- The brief
- Somewhere to work four days a week that still works as a guest room twice a year.
- What changed
- The desk turned to face the side window, a sofa bed on the opposite wall, closed storage for paperwork, and a warmer white for the walls.
The narrow living room, before and after
- A built-in bench with storage turns the window end into a place to sit.
- The sofa moves to the long wall, so the room seats six without blocking the window.
- The TV goes on the wall opposite the sofa, low and centred on it.
- Two lamps and a picture light take over from the single ceiling light.
How a full-room project runs
Five stages, and nothing is ordered until you've signed off the list. Sample timings
Week 1
Call and site visit
A short phone call first. Then we visit to measure, take photos and hear how you use the room and what has to stay.
Weeks 2 to 4
Concept
You get a layout plan, a concept board with fabric and finish samples to handle at home, and a first list of furniture with prices.
Weeks 5 to 6
Final design
One round of changes, then the full list: every item with its size, finish, price and lead time, plus lighting and paint.
After you approve
Ordering and deliveries
You pay for the items on the approved list and we place the orders, track each delivery and check pieces when they arrive.
Install day
Setting up the room
We place the furniture, hang curtains and art, and style the shelves. You get a care sheet for each fabric and finish.
E-design skips the visit and install day: you send photos and measurements, we send the plan and a shopping list, and you order the pieces yourself.
What you pay us, and what you pay for the room
Our design fee and the cost of furniture and materials are separate, and you see both before you commit. Sample fees and terms
- A flat design fee per room. It's set in a written agreement before the first visit and doesn't change if the room takes longer.
- Furniture and materials at the listed price. We don't add a markup. Where a supplier gives us a trade price, it's the price on your list.
- Half the fee to start, half at final design. Items are paid for when you approve the list, so orders go in straight away.
- Contractors bill you directly. Painters, electricians and joiners quote and invoice you themselves. We can recommend people and check the work on site.
| Full-room design, first room | $4,500 |
|---|---|
| Each extra room on the same project | $3,200 |
| E-design, per room | $950 |
| Design consultation, 2 hours | $300 |
Travel beyond 30 miles of the studio is charged at cost. All figures on this page are samples for a concept site.
Where the furniture and fabrics come from
We don't work for any one brand or showroom. Each room is put together from a mix of sources.
Furniture makers and trade showrooms
Sofas, chairs, tables and beds, including pieces made to order in the size and fabric the room needs.
Upholsterers and curtain workrooms
Local workrooms for curtains, blinds, cushions and recovering chairs you already own.
Vintage and antique dealers
One or two older pieces in most rooms, so the room doesn't look bought in one afternoon.
What you already own
We list what stays before we choose anything new. Keeping a good piece is cheaper than replacing it.
What we check before anything is ordered
- Every size checked against your doorways, stairs and lift
- Lead time and delivery date for each item
- Cleaning codes for fabrics, and how they wear with kids and pets
- Return terms, so you know which items can't be sent back
Questions people ask before hiring a designer
Something else? Ask it in your enquiry, or call (555) 016-4418.
Do we have to replace everything?
No. We start with a list of what you own and what stays. Most rooms keep a few pieces, and some keep most of them.
How long does a room take?
About six weeks of design for a full room. Delivery depends on what you choose: stock items can arrive in a week or two, and made-to-order sofas often take 8 to 14 weeks. These are sample timings.
Is e-design right for us?
It suits people who are happy to measure, place orders and put furniture together, or who live too far away for a visit. We work by video call and email.
Can you work with our contractor?
Yes. We can supply drawings for built-in joinery, lighting positions and tile layouts. Structural changes need an architect or engineer, and we can work alongside them.
What if we don't like the concept?
Your fee includes one round of changes after the concept and one after the final design. Further rounds are charged by the hour. This is a sample policy.
Tell us about the room
We reply to set up a short call, then book the visit or the video call. This is a demo form, so nothing is sent. Concept
