How a session runs

The same five steps for every kind of session. Newborn sessions are planned around your due date and confirmed once baby arrives.

  1. You pick a date

Choose a session and pay a $100 retainer to hold the date. It comes off your fee.

  2. We plan it on a short call

Fifteen minutes on the location, who's coming, the best time of day around naps, and what to wear.

  3. Session day

I arrive ten minutes early. Most photos happen while you walk, talk and play, with a few simple prompts from me. Breaks are fine.

  4. Sneak peek in 2 days

Three of my favourites by email, so you're not waiting weeks to see anything.

  5. Your gallery

Every edited photo in a private online gallery. Download them in full size and order prints from the same page.

Hattie Marsh

I work on my own, so the person you speak to on the planning call is the one holding the camera. For newborn sessions I bring a heater, a white-noise machine and plenty of patience. Sample profile

What to wear

Clothes make more difference to the finished photos than most people expect. Here's what works for each kind of session.

Family sessions

  • Pick three or four colours that go together and spread them across the family. Matching outfits tend to look stiff.
  • Solid colours and small patterns photograph best. Skip big logos, slogans and neon.
  • Add layers and texture: a cardigan, a jacket, a scarf. They give little hands something to hold.
  • Wear shoes you can walk in. Outdoor sessions usually mean a short stroll.
  • Bring a spare top for the youngest. Something will get spilled.

Newborn sessions

  • Baby needs nothing special: a plain onesie or the swaddle on its own is perfect.
  • Parents in soft, plain colours. Short or rolled sleeves look natural when you're holding baby.
  • Keep the house warm, around 78°F, so baby sleeps through the unwrapped photos.
  • Feed baby shortly before I arrive if you can. Full babies sleep.
  • Don't tidy the whole house. I only need one room with a big window.

Headshot sessions

  • Bring two tops in plain colours that you'd wear to work. One with a collar or jacket is useful.
  • Avoid thin stripes and small checks. They shimmer on screen.
  • Wear the glasses you wear every day. I'll angle the lights so they don't reflect.
  • Come as you'd look on a normal workday. Retouching tidies stray hairs and blemishes and leaves your face as it is.

Colours that work together

Two example palettes for a family of four. Choose one colour each from the same row.

Warm neutrals

Soft blues

Not sure? Send me photos of a few outfits before the session and I'll help you choose.

Questions people ask before booking

Anything else, call (555) 017-2290 or ask in the form.

Do we get the digital files?

Yes. Every edited photo in your gallery downloads in full size, with a print release so you can print them anywhere you like.

What if it rains on the day?

Outdoor sessions move to the next free date at no charge. I check the forecast with you two days before.

My kids won't sit still. Is that a problem?

Not at all. I don't ask young kids to hold a pose for long. We take breaks, and some of the best photos come from the moments in between.

How do you keep newborns safe?

Baby is always on a soft, low surface with a parent or me within arm's reach. I don't use hanging props or poses that need baby to hold up their own head.

Do you give out the unedited files?

No. I pick the best frames and edit each one for colour and light. Blinks and near-duplicates don't go in the gallery.

How do I move my session?

Tell me at least 48 hours ahead and we'll pick a new date, and your retainer moves with you (sample policy).

Ask about a date

Tell me what you have in mind. I reply with the dates I have free and a link to pay the retainer. This is a demo form, so nothing is sent. Concept
