What we teach

Two disciplines, each with kids and adult classes. Karate is mostly standing: strikes, kicks, blocks and forms. Jiu-jitsu is grappling on the mat, with no strikes.

  • Kids karate

Ages 5 to 7 and 8 to 12, in separate groups

Stances, blocks and kicks taught as drills and games, with a bow in and out and short rests between rounds. No sparring for the 5 to 7 group.

    45 min

  • Adult karate

Ages 16 and up, all levels in one class

Warm-up, basics up and down the room, then forms (kata) and pad work. Light contact sparring is optional from orange belt, with gloves and a mouthguard.

    60 min

  • Kids jiu-jitsu

    Ages 8 to 13

Ground grappling: holding positions, escaping and getting back to your feet. Partners are matched by size and age, and coaches stop every round on time.

    50 min

  • Adult jiu-jitsu

Ages 16 and up, fundamentals and all-levels classes

Fundamentals classes teach one position a week, start to finish. All-levels classes add timed rounds of rolling (sparring), which you can sit out at any time.

    60 to 75 min

How a trial class works

  1. Pick a class and book

Choose any beginner-friendly time from the timetable. We confirm by text and tell you who'll be teaching.

  2. Arrive 15 minutes early

Fill in a short waiver and health form at the desk (a parent signs for anyone under 18). We lend you a belt and show you where to change.

  3. Train, then talk prices

You do the whole class with a partner who has trained for a while. Afterwards we go through memberships, and there's no pressure to sign that day.

The belt path

Karate gradings happen four times a year. You're invited to grade when your instructor has seen the work in class, and the times below are minimums. Most people take longer, and that's normal. Sample syllabus

  1. White beltHow to stand, bow, fall safely and make a fist. The first form.Where everyone starts
  2. Yellow beltFront and roundhouse kicks, basic blocks, the first two forms.3 months and 24 classes
  3. Orange beltCombinations, side kick and an introduction to light-contact sparring with gloves.3 months and 24 classes
  4. Green beltFootwork and timing, longer forms, partner drills at speed.4 months and 32 classes
  5. Blue beltCounter-attacks, sweeps and the first form with a turn in every line.6 months and 40 classes
  6. Purple beltApplying forms with a partner, helping lead the warm-up.6 months and 40 classes
  7. Brown beltAll forms to date, refined. Three brown belt levels, each with its own grading.6 months per level
  8. Black beltA longer grading in front of a panel. Training continues from here.At least 1 year after the last brown

Jiu-jitsu belts work differently

Adults have five belts: white, blue, purple, brown and black, with up to four stripes on each. There's no grading day and no fee. Your instructor promotes you after watching you train over months.

Mat rules

Every student and parent reads these before the first class. Sample rules

  1. Bow on and off the mat

It tells the instructor you're there and ready, or that you're leaving.

  2. Tap, and let go straight away

In jiu-jitsu, a tap on your partner or the mat means stop. Let go the moment you feel or hear one.

  3. The instructor sets the pace

Sparring and rolling are always optional, and the instructor can stop any round.

  4. Tell us about injuries

Mention any injury or health condition before class, and we'll show you how to work around it.

  5. Clean kit, bare feet on the mat

Wash your uniform after every class. Shoes stay off the mat, and flip-flops go on whenever you step off it.

  6. Kids are signed in and out

A parent or named adult signs each child in at the desk and collects them inside. Two staff are on every kids class.

Common questions

Anything else, ask at the desk or call (555) 014-2290.

I've never done a martial art. Is that a problem?

No. Most students start with no experience, and every class has beginners in it. You'll work with a partner who has trained for a while.

Do I have to spar?

No. Karate sparring starts at orange belt and jiu-jitsu rounds start when you're ready, and you can sit out any round.

What age can kids start?

Kids karate starts at 5 and kids jiu-jitsu at 8. If you're not sure about your child's group, book a trial and we'll tell you after class.

Can parents watch?

Yes. There's seating along one side of the mat for every class.
