Advice

What makes a good shop or boutique website.

  1. Show collections, not every product

A few clear collections with good photos tell people what kind of shop you are faster than a long list.

  2. Tell your story

How the shop started and how you choose what you stock. The About page has a "How it started" section.

  3. Make visiting easy

Opening hours, a map and parking notes belong on the "Visit us" page, and on your Google Business Profile in the same words.

  4. Use consistent product photos

The same light and background across photos make a small range look considered. Describe each photo with the product name.

  5. Post a clear returns policy

Even if you only sell in person, say how returns and exchanges work.

The 2026 Store Owner's Guide to Checkout, Inventory and Repeat Sales

  • Make checkout boring, fast and free of surprises

Shop your own store from a phone every month

Website errors and a long, complicated checkout are both on Baymard's list of reasons people leave. You won't find these from your office desktop. Once a month, buy a low-cost item on your phone over cellular data, using an email address the store has never seen. Note every field that felt unnecessary, every pop-up that got in the way, and how long the confirmation email took to arrive. Then refund the order.

  • Keep one honest inventory count across store and site

Only promise shipping times you can keep

The FTC's Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule says you need a reasonable basis to ship within the time you state, or within 30 days if you state no time. If you can't ship on time, you must notify the customer and give them the option to cancel for a prompt refund. This is one more reason inventory accuracy matters: selling stock you don't have creates the delay. Talk to your attorney if you're unsure how the rule applies to preorders or backorders.

  • Get found without paying for every click

Write product titles and data for real searches

Shoppers search for specifics: brand, material, size, color, use. A title like 'Classic Tee' tells Google and the shopper very little, while one that names the brand, fabric and fit does more work. Google's product structured data documentation explains how price, availability, ratings and shipping details can appear in search results when your pages mark them up correctly. Most modern store themes add basic markup, but it's worth checking that the price and stock it reports are accurate.

  • Earn trust: payments, accessibility, reviews and returns

Ask for honest reviews and post a clear returns policy

The FTC's rule on consumer reviews and testimonials, in effect since October 2024, bans fake reviews, incentives that depend on a review being positive, and threats or intimidation to remove negative ones. Undisclosed reviews from employees or family are also a problem. Ask every buyer for a review in your post-purchase email and let the results be what they are. Pair that with a returns policy that's easy to find and plain to read, since an unsatisfying returns policy shows up in Baymard's abandonment reasons and Google Merchant Center asks for a return policy too.

FAQ

Questions about a free shop or boutique website

Can I sell online?

Not yet. The online shop is coming soon and will be part of the website plan ($29 a month). Until then the website works as your shop window: collections, photos, opening hours and directions.

Can I collect email addresses for a newsletter?

Email signups and newsletters are part of the website plan ($29 a month). Everyone confirms their address before they are added, and you can email your list from your portal. On a free website the signup section stays hidden.

Can people find the shop on a map?

Yes. The "Visit us" page has a location and map section, opening hours and a contact form.

How much does it cost?

Nothing to build and publish: your site goes live free on its own name.epicte.ch address with HTTPS and a small "Made with EpicTech" line in the footer. No card needed. The website plan ($29 a month) adds your own domain, online booking, event RSVPs, newsletters, members-only pages and a download of your site, and removes that line. Cancel any time and the site stays live on its free address.
